The Forging of the Sampo by Akseli Gallen-Kallela

This 1893 painting depicting Ilmarinen is forging the magical mill called Sampo. The Sampo can bring fortune and riches to its holder. The scene adapted from Finish epic poem named Kalevala.

Born in Pori, Finland, Akseli Gallen-Kallela is known as one of the leading practitioners of the international Art Nouveau movement.
