Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969) by Francis Bacon

An historic record was set in November 2103 when Three Studies of Lucian Freud went $142,405,000 at Christie’s – the most expensive work of art record sold at auction.

This triptych was a big shot in the arm for the art market. And oddly enough, the sale gave contemporary artists hope that there is life after Picasso, who reigns as the quintessential maestro of modern art.

In this painting, the chair on which the figure is sitting is here supported by the ubiquitous cage structure and by bed-ends. But they are only powerless signs of the idea of an interior, rather than an effective means of creating an interior.
