Interchange by Willem de Kooning

The painting measures 200.7 by 175.3 cm (79.0 by 69.0 in) and was completed in 1955.Interchange originally sold in 1955, the year de Kooning painted it. The buyer paid $4,000. After the gallery took its cut, de Kooning likely pocketed around $2,000 from the sale. At Sotheby’s auctions Interchange (1955) brought $20.6 million in 1989. In September 2015, it was sold by the David Geffen Foundation to Kenneth C. Griffin for $300 million.

Willem de Kooning, regarded by many artists, critics, and collectors as "the most important painter at work in the middle of our century," came to this country from The Netherlands in 1926.
