Princes in the Tower by John Everett Millais

Historians have kept the story of Richard alive but so have writers and artist, drawn to the story of the most enigmatic of English monarchs, particular to the murder mystery of the fate of his nephews.

Painting made by Sir John Millais depicts the 12-year old King Edward V, yet to be crowned, clasped the hand of his younger brother, Richard.

The boys dressed from head to toe in black, are standing at the foot of stairs to the Garden Tower in the Tower of London with fear and uncertainty in their eyes and gestures.

Princes in the Tower indicate Millais’s interest in subjects connected to Britain’s history and expanding empire. He achieved great popularity with his paintings of children.
