The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a terrifying late 15th century depiction of the fateful day at the end of time when, according to the Bible’s last book (King James version of the bible), Death, Famine, War and Pestilence will annihilate the human race.

German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) personified Death as an emaciated old man with a pitchfork. He illustrates the opening of four of the seven ‘seals’ from a scroll that holds the final judgment of God. With each seal removed from the scroll, a horseman with a different power is released.

In this painting image of the Four Horsemen riding across the sky, with the archangel hovering above them, conquering and slaying everything before them, while the monster of Hell devours the mighty of this world, is vivid and hunting.

Durer’s Famine swings the scales for weighing human souls, War wields a sword, and Pestilence draws a bow.
