The Bedroom by van Gogh

Van Gogh painted his bedroom in Arles in October 1888. Van Gogh was proud of this painting of his bedroom and produced two replicas of it a year later.

The first version of The Bedroom was one of the paintings van Gogh made to decorate the house in anticipation of the arrival of his first guest Paul Gauguin.

He used few shadows, a technique borrowed from the Japanese. He chose vibrant colors, that seemed more expressive than realistic.

The first of the three oils painting is in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It was damaged during a flood that occurred while the painter in hospital.

Almost a year later, van Gogh made two copies of it: one, is now in the Art Institute in Chicago; the other in the Musee d’Orsay. produced for his family.

The room furnished with simple pine furniture and his own paintings. Over the bed hang his portraits of the poets Eugene Boch and the soldier Paul-Eugene Milliet.
