Open Window Collioure 1905 by Henri Matisse

It is oil painting in canvas with 55.2 x 46 cm. Henry Matisse rocked the art world in the summer of 1905 with Open Window, Collioure. Henri Matisse, French artist one of the modern arts original founding fathers.

The painting was a motif that haunted Matisse from the days when he first glimpsed another world through the half open glass door of the northern lawyer’s office where he worked as a clerk.

The painting depicts sailboats in a Mediterranean port, but Matisse painted his waves pink, his sky turquoise and periwinkle.

Matisse seems to be enjoying himself making painting within a painting; frame by the window on three side and the balcony at the bottom.

Open window is provocative and vibrant and it rewrote the rules for using color.
