The Scream by Edvard Munch 1893

Sold in May 12, 2012 at $119.9 million. The buyer was Leon David Black an American businessman.

Edvard Munch was born in Løten in December 12, 1863. He was Scandinavia’s greatest painter. The Scream, shows the lonely man standing on a bridge or jetty on a landscape. His eyes wide open in distress, hands clasped to the head, while in background two well-dressed figures walk on unconcernedly.

The Scream evokes a visceral, emotional response from the viewer because of the painters dramatic presentation.

Munch painted several versions of the subject. Love, death, darkness and anxiety were his overarching themes. The latter was best expressed in his most famous painting, The Scream.

The Scream represents the intolerable fear of losing one’s mind. Every line in the painting heaves with agitation, setting up turbulent rhythms with no relief for the eye.
