The Weeping Woman by Picasso

Picasso and the Weeping Women featuring the artist’s late 1930s images of women going to oddly shaped pieces with grief, and terror is a great show.

The model for the painting was Dora Maar. The long, black hair, the dark, fringed eyes and the garish make-up identify this weeping woman as Dora Maar.

Although it is associated with Picasso’s portraits of Dora Maar, this painting is not a portrait per se and in fact some of its color harmonies – such as the violet yellow and red.

Picasso allegorically captures the suffering of war-torn Spain in the agony depicted in Maar’s face.
